Partager un monde, un territoire, ne va pas de soi. Savoir comment vivent les animaux ne suffit pas\u00a0: encore faut-il vouloir leur faire une place\u00a0? L\u2019exposition spacieuse rassemble plus de 330 objets et sp\u00e9cimens, associ\u00e9s \u00e0 des \u0153uvres visuelles et sonores. Elle croise plusieurs disciplines : histoire naturelle, art et histoire des soci\u00e9t\u00e9s, anthropologie, et nous donne \u00e0 comprendre pourquoi les humains entretiennent avec eux des relations aussi diff\u00e9rentes, parfois affectueuses, parfois spirituelles, voire utilitaires ou conflictuelles.<\/p>\n

Pourquoi certains animaux sont-ils aim\u00e9s et d\u2019autres exploit\u00e9s ? C\u2019est l\u2019une des contradictions centrales du parcours. Un chien peut \u00eatre consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme un membre de la famille, tandis qu\u2019un animal d\u2019une esp\u00e8ce diff\u00e9rente peut \u00eatre \u00e9lev\u00e9 pour son alimentation ou chass\u00e9\u00a0? La d\u00e9ambulation dans les diff\u00e9rentes salles nous fait comprendre comment ces distinctions se construisent selon les cultures, les habitudes et les contextes historiques.<\/p>\n

Comment les animaux deviennent-ils des symboles ? Prenons le tigre, le lion. En Asie, ils sont tr\u00e8s repr\u00e9sent\u00e9s, parce que le f\u00e9lin symbolise, la force et la protection. En Chine, au Japon, ces valeurs sont t\u00f4t transmises aux enfants. Un animal peut repr\u00e9senter une divinit\u00e9, un anc\u00eatre, une communaut\u00e9 ou une puissance particuli\u00e8re. Il peut aussi \u00eatre associ\u00e9 \u00e0 des interdits, \u00e0 des c\u00e9r\u00e9monies ou \u00e0 des r\u00e9cits fondateurs. Il arrive m\u00eame qu\u2019on aille jusqu\u2019\u00e0 lui consacrer une urne fun\u00e9raire, lorsqu\u2019il meurt. L\u2019enjeu scientifique ici consiste \u00e0 appr\u00e9hender ces significations dans leur contexte, sans les r\u00e9duire \u00e0 de simples superstitions, ni supposer qu\u2019elles sont identiques d\u2019une culture \u00e0 l\u2019autre.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>\u00ab\u00a0Il n\u2019y a pas d\u2019h\u00e9catombes brutales, pas de cadavres d\u2019animaux qui jonchent le sol, mais de g\u00e9n\u00e9rations de moins en moins abondantes qui s\u2019\u00e9teignent peu \u00e0 peu<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb, analyse Bruno David, naturaliste et biologiste de l\u2019\u00e9volution, \u00e0 propos des races d\u2019animaux sauvages en voie de disparition, \u00e9voqu\u00e9es dans l\u2019exposition. Que nous apprennent les zoos et les collections naturalistes ? On est saisi par un tableau de l\u2019artiste Gilles Aillaud qui date de 1981, intitul\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0Ours blanc\u00a0\u00bb, aux nuances de blancs presque hypnotiques\u00a0: un ours blanc couch\u00e9 de tout son long, dans un espace de brume froide qu\u2019on pourrait prendre pour une banquise. C\u2019est h\u00e9las, les parois d\u2019un zoo, le chant triste et compassionnel\u00a0d\u2019un humain devant la vision d\u2019un ours enferm\u00e9. Si les zoos et les mus\u00e9es ont contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 la connaissance des esp\u00e8ces, l\u2019histoire nous rappelle qu\u2019ils ont aussi une histoire faite de captures, de commerce, d\u2019expositions. Le parcours permet d\u2019aborder le r\u00f4le des zoos et la vivisection.<\/p>\n

Au fond, jusqu\u2019o\u00f9 pouvons-nous comprendre les animaux\u00a0? Souvent, nous leur pr\u00eatons des intentions et des \u00e9motions humaines. Comment reconna\u00eetre les capacit\u00e9s et les comportements propres aux autres esp\u00e8ces, sans leur attribuer automatiquement nos propres fa\u00e7ons de penser\u00a0? La sc\u00e9nographie joue \u00e9galement un r\u00f4le important : tapisserie immense de l\u2019entr\u00e9e \u00e9voquant le conte japonais de la princesse Mononok\u00e9,<\/em> mobilier color\u00e9 \u00e9voquant la paille, dessins de chim\u00e8res m\u00ealant silhouettes humaines et animales, r\u00e9cits sonores et biographies d\u2019animaux. Elle nous dit que l\u2019exposition va bien au-del\u00e0 des croyances et des animaux sacr\u00e9s, malgr\u00e9 son titre.<\/p>\n
