C\u2019est ce que propose Christophe Bigot en signant cette biographie illustr\u00e9e de Marguerite Yourcenar aux \u00e9ditions Gallimard. Soit 240 pages et une centaine de photographies, dont beaucoup sont m\u00e9connues, pour partir \u00e0 la (re)d\u00e9couverte d\u2019une romanci\u00e8re et po\u00e9tesse trop souvent jug\u00e9e aride, fig\u00e9e dans la solennit\u00e9 de la statue du Commandeur.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Christophe Bigot ne cache pas sa tendresse pour l\u2019auteure des \u00ab M\u00e9moires d\u2019Hadrien \u00bb (1951) et de \u00ab L\u2019\u0152uvre au noir \u00bb (1968), dont il fr\u00e9quente les textes depuis son adolescence, comme lecteur d\u2019abord, puis comme professeur de lettres. On lui doit d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00ab Un autre m\u2019attend ailleurs \u00bb (2024), un roman inspir\u00e9 des derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es de l\u2019\u00e9crivaine, lorsqu\u2019elle se remit \u00e0 voyager en compagnie de son dernier amour, le jeune et sulfureux photographe am\u00e9ricain Jerry Wilson, de 46 ans son cadet.<\/p>\n<p>Pour r\u00e9diger cette biographie imag\u00e9e, Christophe Bigot n\u2019a pas emprunt\u00e9 les chemins acad\u00e9miques balis\u00e9s par Josyane Savigneau, auteure de la grande \u0153uvre de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence sur la premi\u00e8re femme \u00e0 avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 re\u00e7ue \u00e0 l\u2019Acad\u00e9mie fran\u00e7aise en 1980. Il a pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9 tisser des liens plus intimes entre l\u2019itin\u00e9raire de cette \u00ab inspiratrice de libert\u00e9 \u00bb et des portraits moins guind\u00e9s que ceux que l\u2019on a coutume de voir publi\u00e9s. Ainsi de ces ann\u00e9es heureuses de sa jeunesse o\u00f9 elle pose, cigarette \u00e0 la main, dans les montagnes grecques ou \u00e0 cheval aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de sa compagne de toujours, l\u2019Am\u00e9ricaine Grace Frick, qui fut aussi sa traductrice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallimard.fr\/catalogue\/marguerite-yourcenar\/9782073159151\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-10845\" src=\"https:\/\/great-artmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/Marguerite-Yourcenar-de-Christophe-Bigot.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"254\" height=\"362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/great-artmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/Marguerite-Yourcenar-de-Christophe-Bigot.png 494w, https:\/\/great-artmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/Marguerite-Yourcenar-de-Christophe-Bigot-211x300.png 211w, https:\/\/great-artmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/Marguerite-Yourcenar-de-Christophe-Bigot-295x420.png 295w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 254px) 100vw, 254px\" \/><\/a>Marguerite Yourcenar fut une femme ardente, \u00e9prise de d\u00e9couvertes, \u00ab intellectuelle port\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019amour \u00bb comme dira d\u2019elle Virginia Woolf, dont elle assura la premi\u00e8re traduction des \u00ab Vagues \u00bb en fran\u00e7ais. \u00c0 travers dix chapitres courts, Christophe Bigot nous invite \u00e0 la suivre, de son enfance pr\u00e9coce et buissonni\u00e8re sur les terres familiales du Mont-Noir en Flandre (rappelons qu\u2019elle ne mit jamais les pieds \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cole) jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ses combats politiques, en particulier \u00e9cologistes, men\u00e9s depuis \u00abPetite Plaisance\u00bb, sa maison du Maine, aux \u00c9tats-Unis. Visc\u00e9ralement attach\u00e9e \u00e0 la langue fran\u00e7aise, qu\u2019elle cisela comme personne, elle fit pourtant le choix de s\u2019ancrer dans le monde anglo-saxon, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 opter pour la nationalit\u00e9 am\u00e9ricaine. Christophe Bigot retrace avec finesse la construction progressive de son imaginaire, d\u00e9voilant les sources intimes et intellectuelles d&#8217;o\u00f9 jailliront ses chefs d\u2019oeuvres.<\/p>\n<p>Quarante ans apr\u00e8s sa mort en 1987, Christophe Bigot l\u2019affirme : Marguerite Yourcenar figure au Panth\u00e9on des plus grands esprits de la litt\u00e9rature. \u00abYourcenar n\u2019a rien \u00e0 envier \u00e0 ces mod\u00e8les de grandeur et d\u2019intelligence dont le rayonnement nous parvient encore \u00bb, \u00e9crit-il, faisant notamment r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 Erasme, L\u00e9onard de Vinci ou Montaigne.
