Gants blancs saisis au vol&#8230;. \u00ab Je photographie ce que je ne d\u00e9sire pas peindre, expliquait Man Ray, et je peins ce que je ne peux pas photographier. \u00bb En associant le visage ovale de sa muse avec un masque africain, le photographe Man Ray cr\u00e9e une image iconique.Dans les ann\u00e9es 20, Paris est en f\u00eate. La capitale des arts attire les artistes du monde entier. L\u2019Am\u00e9ricain Man Ray en fait partie. Sous l\u2019influence de son ami Marcel Duchamp \u00e0 New York, l\u2019artiste de trente ans fait le voyage pour la France en 1921. Son atelier est situ\u00e9 au c\u0153ur du quartier anim\u00e9 de Montparnasse. C\u2019est l\u00e0 qu\u2019il rencontre Alice Prin. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Devenue son amante et sa muse, l\u2019actrice r\u00e9put\u00e9e, appel\u00e9e \u00ab Kiki de Montparnasse \u00bb lui pr\u00e9sente le tout-Paris. Man Ray s\u2019int\u00e9resse aux objets. S\u2019il s\u2019est lanc\u00e9 dans la photographie, en tant que plasticien, c\u2019est parce qu\u2019il n\u2019\u00e9tait pas satisfait des clich\u00e9s de ses peintures faits par d\u2019autres. Cadrage, lumi\u00e8re, contraste\u2026 Il comprend que la technique peut \u00eatre d\u00e9tourn\u00e9e de fa\u00e7on cr\u00e9ative. Son premier portrait photographique original, \u00ab Violon d\u2019Ingres \u00bb, r\u00e9alis\u00e9 en 1924, contribue \u00e0 le faire conna\u00eetre.  Kiki de Montparnasse y appara\u00eet nue, de dos, avec les ou\u00efes d\u2019un violon au creux des reins. La mod\u00e8le, habitu\u00e9e des peintres, ne voulait pas poser ainsi, ayant peur de se pr\u00eater \u00e0 une r\u00e9alit\u00e9 trop crue. Pourtant, elle poursuit l\u2019aventure. <\/p>\n<p>C\u2019est ainsi qu\u2019en 1926, Kiki de Montparnasse figure dans \u00ab Noire et blanche \u00bb, une photographie publi\u00e9e pour la premi\u00e8re fois dans l\u2019\u00e9dition fran\u00e7aise du magazine Vogue. George Sakier, le directeur artistique, incite \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque Man Ray \u00e0 cr\u00e9er des compositions innovantes. La similarit\u00e9 formelle entre le visage de la jeune femme et le masque africain n\u2019est pas fortuite. Les deux ovales, pench\u00e9s l\u2019un sur l\u2019autre, entrent en dialogue. Il y a similarit\u00e9 de statut. En effet, le masque-portrait traditionnel baoul\u00e9, produit en C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire, est souvent command\u00e9 \u00e0 un sculpteur pour rendre hommage \u00e0 un membre du village et honorer ses qualit\u00e9s. Lors d\u2019une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie, le porteur du masque est accompagn\u00e9 de la personne qu\u2019il c\u00e9l\u00e8bre ou d\u2019un rempla\u00e7ant. Dans la s\u00e9rie de photographies intitul\u00e9e \u00ab Noire et blanche \u00bb, Man Ray met ainsi au m\u00eame niveau son mod\u00e8le vivant et son double. V\u00e9ritable embl\u00e8me de la n\u00e9gritude dans un contexte de post-colonialisme, l\u2019\u0153uvre devient tr\u00e8s vite iconique.<\/p>\n<p>Le saviez-vous ? En arrivant aux Etats-Unis, la famille Radnitzky, immigr\u00e9e de Russie, d\u00e9cide de changer son nom en Ray en r\u00e9action \u00e0 l&#8217;antis\u00e9mitisme ambiant. De son vrai nom, Emmanuel Radnitsky, le surnom Manny devient \u00ab Man \u00bb. L\u2019artiste Man Ray \u00e9tait n\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Pr\u00e8s de cinq cents \u0153uvres retracent les recherches formelles de Man Ray au Palais Lumi\u00e8re \u00e0 \u00c9vian-les-Bains (Haute-Savoie). L\u2019exposition monographique met l\u2019accent sur la pluralit\u00e9 des m\u00e9diums et la grande cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9 de cet artiste connu avant tout pour ses \u00ab rayogrammes \u00bb, ces clich\u00e9s obtenus \u00e0 partir d\u2019un objet pos\u00e9 entre le papier et la source lumineuse. Par l\u2019entremise de sa muse, Kiki de Montparnasse, Man Ray fr\u00e9quente l\u2019avant-garde artistique dont il devient l\u2019une des figures de proue.
