Majestueuses, color\u00e9es, elles imposent leur pr\u00e9sence. Je d\u00e9couvre le 29 avril 2011 ces \u0153uvres le jour du mariage princier de Kate Middleton et Prince William, un \u00e9cho inattendu \u00e0 la th\u00e9matique nuptiale que l\u2019artiste interroge, \u00e0 sa mani\u00e8re, depuis son village natal.<\/p>\n<h3>Des Chaises de mariage r\u00e9alis\u00e9es \u00e0 partir de saris recycl\u00e9s<\/h3>\n<p>Ces <em>Chaises de mariage<\/em> sont con\u00e7ues \u00e0 partir de chutes de tissus de saris collect\u00e9es aupr\u00e8s des femmes de Partapur, village situ\u00e9 dans l\u2019ouest de l\u2019Inde. Chaque fragment textile porte une m\u00e9moire intime. Assembl\u00e9s, ils forment une structure monumentale qui \u00e9voque \u00e0 la fois le tr\u00f4ne, le rituel et la transmission. L\u2019\u0153uvre fait explicitement r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 la dot, pratique toujours r\u00e9pandue en Inde. La famille de la mari\u00e9e doit verser une somme ou des biens \u00e0 celle du futur \u00e9poux. Cette tradition alimente depuis des d\u00e9cennies des d\u00e9s\u00e9quilibres sociaux profonds. Le pays affiche encore un ratio d\u2019environ 93 femmes pour 100 hommes, r\u00e9v\u00e9lateur d\u2019in\u00e9galit\u00e9s persistantes.<\/p>\n<p>En d\u00e9tournant le symbole du si\u00e8ge d\u2019apparat, Lochan Upadhyay transforme l\u2019objet en espace critique. La chaise devient tribune.<\/p>\n<h3>Lochan Upadhyay, une jeune figure soutenue par la FICA<\/h3>\n<p>\u00c2g\u00e9 de 27 ans, dipl\u00f4m\u00e9 de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 des Beaux-Arts de Baroda, Lochan Upadhyay s\u2019impose comme l\u2019un des jeunes artistes indiens \u00e0 suivre. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 remarqu\u00e9 par la Foundation for Indian Contemporary Art (FICA), acteur majeur du soutien \u00e0 la cr\u00e9ation contemporaine en Inde.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00ab Ce qui compte pour moi, c\u2019est l\u2019esprit participatif. \u00bb<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Au c\u0153ur de sa d\u00e9marche : la relation avec les habitants de Partapur. Il r\u00e9alise leurs portraits, souvent assis sur cette chaise-tr\u00f4ne. Le contraste entre leurs v\u00eatements et l\u2019assemblage panach\u00e9 des tissus color\u00e9s renforce la puissance visuelle de l\u2019image. L\u2019individu dialogue avec la communaut\u00e9.<\/p>\n<h3>Art participatif et sculptures en plastique recycl\u00e9<\/h3>\n<p>La m\u00eame logique collaborative structure la s\u00e9rie <em>Mobile Home<\/em>. Ces sculptures sont compos\u00e9es de fils multicolores torsad\u00e9s, r\u00e9alis\u00e9s \u00e0 partir de plastiques 100 % recycl\u00e9s. Ici, l\u2019artiste aborde frontalement la question de la pollution en Inde, o\u00f9 les niveaux de contamination d\u00e9passent r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement les seuils sanitaires recommand\u00e9s. Les mat\u00e9riaux r\u00e9cup\u00e9r\u00e9s deviennent mati\u00e8re \u00e0 cr\u00e9ation. Le rebut se transforme en architecture fragile.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019exposition \u00e0 la Galerie Albert Benamou r\u00e9unit une dizaine d\u2019\u0153uvres.<br \/>\nToutes articulent trois axes forts :<br \/>\n* critique des traditions sociales li\u00e9es \u00e0 la dot<br \/>\n* valorisation du travail collectif et communautaire<br \/>\n* d\u00e9nonciation de la pollution plastique en Inde<\/p>\n<p>Avec ses <em>Chaises de mariage<\/em>, Lochan Upadhyay conjugue esth\u00e9tique textile, art participatif et engagement soci\u00e9tal. \u00c0 Paris, son travail rappelle que l\u2019art contemporain indien interroge autant les h\u00e9ritages culturels que les urgences environnementales.<\/p>\n<p>Galerie Albert Benamou, 24, rue de Penthi\u00e8vre Paris 8e.
