En 1853, dans cette cit\u00e9 proven\u00e7ale, Paul C\u00e9zanne rencontre Emile Zola au coll\u00e8ge Bourbon, rue Cardinale. Leur amiti\u00e9 est scell\u00e9e, ainsi que leur destin. <\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Au domaine familial du Jas-de-Bouffan, l&#8217;atelier de C\u00e9zanne; les d\u00e9cors et le mobilier sont rest\u00e9s quasi-intacts ; \u00e0 quelques pas de ces \u00e9difices se tiennent majestueusement la montagne Sainte-Victoire, la plus grande muse du peintre qui lui vaut 44 huiles sur toile et 43 aquarelles, et les Carri\u00e8res de Bib\u00e9mus que certains consid\u00e8rent comme le berceau des formes cubistes. C\u00e9zanne est, d\u00e8s sa plus lointaine jeunesse, tr\u00e8s attach\u00e9 \u00e0 sa Provence natale. Il en sortira de temps \u00e0 autre pour c\u00f4toyer les Salons et le cercle Impressionniste \u00e0 Paris mais pour de tr\u00e8s courtes dur\u00e9es. Sa rencontre avec Emile Zola intervient \u00e0 un moment o\u00f9 celui-ci descend de Paris avec sa famille qui s&#8217;installe dans le centre. Le jeune Zola n&#8217;est pas accept\u00e9 et vit tr\u00e8s mal sa jeunesse, son a\u00een\u00e9 C\u00e9zanne lui octroie alors protection car lui-m\u00eame est exclut des autres.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>L&#8217;un excelle dans le dessin, l&#8217;autre dans l&#8217;\u00e9criture ; mais pas dans l&#8217;ordre que l&#8217;on pense, car le jeune C\u00e9zanne est un excellent \u00e9crivain, et Zola en regrette la d\u00e9mission : <em>&#8220;Le po\u00e8te a bien des mani\u00e8res de s&#8217;exprimer : la plume, le pinceau, le ciseau, l&#8217;instrument. Tu as pris le pinceau, et tu as bien fait : on doit descendre sa pente. (&#8230;) Seulement permets-moi de pleurer sur l&#8217;\u00e9crivain qui meurt en toi.&#8221;<\/em> (lettre de Zola \u00e0 C\u00e9zanne du 1er ao\u00fbt 1860). Le ma\u00eetre de l&#8217;<em>Assommoir<\/em>, lui, adopte le chemin inverse, il part dessinateur et finit \u00e9crivain. Ce qui devait se faire se fait et Zola connait rapidement le succ\u00e8s qu&#8217;on lui connait. C\u00e9zanne, lui, patientera longtemps&#8230; tr\u00e8s longtemps, avant de le connaitre lui aussi ; car jusqu&#8217;en 1899, il est plut\u00f4t reconnu comme un peintre d\u00e9chu. Quelle autre carri\u00e8re peut \u00eatre aussi paradoxale que celle de C\u00e9zanne ? Mais leur relation s&#8217;effrite peu \u00e0 peu, Zola est riche et c\u00e9l\u00e8bre, perdu dans les m\u00e9andres de la mondanit\u00e9 parisienne et C\u00e9zanne est retir\u00e9 dans sa campagne et peu sollicit\u00e9. <em>&#8220;Mon cher Emile, je viens de recevoir L&#8217;Oeuvre, que tu as bien voulu m&#8217;adresser. Je remercie l&#8217;auteur des Rougon-Macquart de ce bon message de souvenir, et je lui demande de me permettre de lui serrer la main en songeant aux anciennes ann\u00e9es&#8221;<\/em> (lettre de C\u00e9zanne \u00e0 Zola, 1886), cette lettre fut la derni\u00e8re entre les deux po\u00e8tes. Selon le mythe, C\u00e9zanne se serait reconnu dans le personnage du peintre mis\u00e9rable et sans succ\u00e8s qui fait l&#8217;objet de <em>L&#8217;Oeuvre<\/em> ; il aurait donc coup\u00e9 les ponts avec son ami d&#8217;enfance. Entre la nature et les \u00e9difices pr\u00e9serv\u00e9s et les correspondances archiv\u00e9es et r\u00e9\u00e9dit\u00e9es, l&#8217;impact que les deux artistes ont eu dans le monde de l&#8217;art et de la litt\u00e9rature est encore tr\u00e8s largement pr\u00e9sent. L\u00e0 o\u00f9 les peintres modernes comme Poussin r\u00eavaient de l&#8217;Arcadie antique p\u00e9loponn\u00e9sienne, C\u00e9zanne et Zola la v\u00e9curent intens\u00e9ment dans leur jeunesse ; tellement intens\u00e9ment, que l&#8217;un n&#8217;a jamais pu la quitter, et l&#8217;autre n&#8217;a jamais trouv\u00e9 le moyen de sortir de l&#8217;envo\u00fbtement nostalgique de cette contr\u00e9e.
