Une photo sign\u00e9e William Wegman, imm\u00e9diatement reconnaissable \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9gance sto\u00efque de son mod\u00e8le canin. Pourtant, aucun cr\u00e9dit. Pas m\u00eame une mention du nom de l\u2019artiste. La photo \u00e9tait rel\u00e9gu\u00e9e au rang de simple illustration pour un article intitul\u00e9 &#8220;Manteau en majest\u00e9&#8221;, retra\u00e7ant l\u2019histoire de Max Mara.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>C\u2019est oublier un peu vite que cette image de 2001, intitul\u00e9e Max Mara Dog 109, est issue d\u2019une commande bien r\u00e9elle de la marque italienne. Fascin\u00e9e par l\u2019univers visuel d\u00e9cal\u00e9 de Wegman, Max Mara l\u2019avait sollicit\u00e9 pour &#8220;glamouriser&#8221; sa campagne publicitaire \u00e0 travers une s\u00e9rie de clich\u00e9s d\u2019une ironie feutr\u00e9e. Les lecteurs auraient m\u00e9rit\u00e9 de savoir qu\u2019ils avaient sous les yeux bien plus qu\u2019un visuel anonyme : une \u0153uvre d\u2019artiste, dr\u00f4le, sensible, et critique.<\/p>\n<p>William Wegman, n\u00e9 en 1943 \u00e0 Holyoke (Massachusetts), commence \u00e0 travailler avec ses chiens dans les ann\u00e9es 1970. D\u2019abord Man Ray \u2014 hommage appuy\u00e9 \u00e0 la photographie conceptuelle \u2014, puis Fay Ray, et toute une lign\u00e9e de braques de Weimar qui deviendront ses compagnons de cr\u00e9ation. Sous son objectif, ces chiens prennent la pose dans des postures humaines, parfois d\u00e9guis\u00e9s, parfois nus, toujours empreints d\u2019un certain spleen burlesque. Wegman joue des r\u00e9f\u00e9rences culturelles : des philosophes de dos \u00e0 la Friedrich aux compositions plus pop et absurdes, il cr\u00e9e une \u0153uvre \u00e0 la fronti\u00e8re du comique et du m\u00e9lancolique. Son travail photographique a fait le tour du monde, expos\u00e9 notamment au MoMA, au Centre Pompidou ou encore \u00e0 la National Gallery \u00e0 Londres.<\/p>\n<p>Et la peinture, dans tout \u00e7a ? Ce que l\u2019on sait moins, c\u2019est que William Wegman est aussi un peintre form\u00e9 \u00e0 la California State University et \u00e0 l\u2019University of Illinois. Ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, il s\u2019est \u00e9loign\u00e9 de la photographie pour revenir \u00e0 la peinture, jouant avec des supports vintage, comme d\u2019anciennes cartes postales ou des manuels scolaires recycl\u00e9s. Il y m\u00eale collages, textes et motifs abstraits dans une veine moins imm\u00e9diatement s\u00e9duisante, mais toujours ironique. En 2018, le Domaine de Kergu\u00e9hennec dans le Morbihan lui consacrait une exposition \u2014 l\u2019une des rares en France \u00e0 pr\u00e9senter l\u2019ensemble de son travail, au-del\u00e0 des chiens en manteau. Un peu comme Alain S\u00e9chas lorsqu\u2019il s\u2019\u00e9loigne de ses chats, Wegman surprend en sortant de sa zone de confort. Mais on se prend \u00e0 regretter ces chiens qui, mieux que n\u2019importe quel miroir, captent nos vanit\u00e9s, nos postures, nos solitudes.<\/p>\n<p>William Wegman continue de cr\u00e9er depuis son atelier de Chelsea \u00e0 New York. Il partage r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement ses \u0153uvres \u2014 anciennes et nouvelles \u2014 sur Instagram, o\u00f9 il est suivi par plus de 300 000 abonn\u00e9s. En 2024, plusieurs galeries am\u00e9ricaines lui ont consacr\u00e9 des expositions r\u00e9trospectives, notamment Sperone Westwater \u00e0 New York. Il continue aussi \u00e0 publier, comme le tr\u00e8s r\u00e9ussi Being Human (Chronicle Books), o\u00f9 l\u2019on retrouve toute la richesse de son approche anthropo-canine.
