Cette phrase, griffonn\u00e9e par David Hockney en mars 2020 au d\u00e9but de la pand\u00e9mie de Covid-19, r\u00e9sonne aujourd\u2019hui comme une d\u00e9claration de r\u00e9sistance, un manifeste color\u00e9 contre la morosit\u00e9 du monde. Elle ouvre David Hockney 25, la r\u00e9trospective d\u2019une ampleur in\u00e9dite que consacre la Fondation Louis Vuitton \u00e0 l\u2019artiste britannique, avec plus de 400 \u0153uvres pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es. Il s\u2019inscrit dans la tradition du paysage anglais, de Constable \u00e0 Turner, tout en la r\u00e9inventant gr\u00e2ce aux outils num\u00e9riques et \u00e0 une audace chromatique profond\u00e9ment contemporaine. Ses grandes frises, comme A Year in Normandie, con\u00e7ue sur iPad, rappellent les Nymph\u00e9as de Monet par leur d\u00e9ploiement immersif et narratif.<br \/>\nDans cette frise longue de 80 m\u00e8tres, la campagne normande devient le th\u00e9\u00e2tre d\u2019un cycle de m\u00e9tamorphoses. Mais Hockney ne peint pas seulement la nature : il donne \u00e0 voir le regard qui s\u2019\u00e9veille \u00e0 ses rythmes. Les saisons passent, les motifs \u00e9voluent, mais la peinture reste, comme une mani\u00e8re de capter le vivant dans sa respiration m\u00eame.<\/h4>\n<p>Chez Hockney, la couleur est vibration. Roses satur\u00e9s, verts acides, bleus \u00e9lectriques, jaunes \u00e9clatants\u2026 Sa palette, d\u2019une extr\u00eame diversit\u00e9, transpose l\u2019\u00e9motion visuelle et la joie de surprendre, malgr\u00e9 l\u2019infinie r\u00e9p\u00e9tition du th\u00e8me. Mais cette couleur n\u2019est pas un simple effet : elle constitue un langage autonome, une mani\u00e8re d\u2019affirmer la beaut\u00e9 du monde dans sa complexit\u00e9, sa mobilit\u00e9, sa lumi\u00e8re. Chaque teinte devient un acte de r\u00e9sistance \u00e0 la fadeur, \u00e0 la grisaille, au d\u00e9senchantement.<br \/>\nLes bouquets de fleurs, motif intime et r\u00e9current dans son \u0153uvre, condensent cette \u00e9nergie. Peints \u00e0 l\u2019huile, dessin\u00e9s au crayon, compos\u00e9s sur iPad ou iPhone, ils saisissent la beaut\u00e9 fugace d\u2019un vase pos\u00e9 sur une table, d\u2019une tige qui se penche, d\u2019une corolle qui s\u2019ouvre. Rien de spectaculaire, mais une attention extr\u00eame \u00e0 la variation, \u00e0 la vibration, au tremblement. Parfois, les fonds se font neutres pour faire \u00e9clater les masses color\u00e9es ; d\u2019autres fois, ils sont anim\u00e9s de motifs graphiques ou de jeux d\u2019ombre. Hockney y explore une palette plus sourde, presque \u00e9lectrique, o\u00f9 les cieux indigo, les feuillages noirs aux reflets violets, les ombres bleues et les halos lumineux percent l\u2019obscurit\u00e9. Loin du romantisme noir, ses nuits vibrent d\u2019un calme habit\u00e9, d\u2019une densit\u00e9 lumineuse rare. Il y a l\u00e0 une po\u00e9sie discr\u00e8te du silence : un arbre solitaire sous un ciel mauve, une route vide baign\u00e9e d\u2019un halo jaune, une maison faiblement \u00e9clair\u00e9e derri\u00e8re un bosquet. Ce n\u2019est pas la nuit en soi qu\u2019Hockney peint, mais ce qu\u2019elle rend possible : l\u2019intimit\u00e9, l\u2019attention, la pr\u00e9sence au monde. Il renouvelle ici le genre du nocturne sans jamais tomber dans l\u2019abstraction ni le d\u00e9coratif. La nuit devient espace de contemplation.<\/h4>\n<blockquote><p>\u00ab\u202fLa joie de cr\u00e9er est in\u00e9puisable\u202f\u00bb<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>La r\u00e9trospective illustre la libert\u00e9 absolue avec laquelle David Hockney traverse les formats et les techniques. Il ne cesse d\u2019explorer, d\u2019inventer, de se r\u00e9inventer. Dessins au crayon, peintures \u00e0 l\u2019huile, \u0153uvres num\u00e9riques sur tablette, installations vid\u00e9o immersives\u2026 Sa curiosit\u00e9 reste intacte, son d\u00e9sir de renouvellement, insatiable. Mais cette plasticit\u00e9 ne l\u2019\u00e9loigne jamais de ses obsessions fondamentales : la nature, les int\u00e9rieurs, les portraits, les piscines. Ces th\u00e8mes ne sont pas des sujets fig\u00e9s, mais des vecteurs pour exp\u00e9rimenter les perceptions. Il revendique l\u2019influence des grands ma\u00eetres. Van Gogh avant tout, dont l\u2019ombre plane sur ses paysages r\u00e9cents. De l\u2019artiste n\u00e9erlandais, il retient la puissance du trait, l\u2019audace des perspectives, la foi dans la nature et surtout cette id\u00e9e que \u00ab\u202fla couleur a une dimension morale\u202f\u00bb. Il dira d\u2019ailleurs : \u00ab\u202fVan Gogh l\u2019a compris mieux que quiconque.\u202f\u00bb Ses filiations sont multiples : la rigueur spatiale de Piero della Francesca, les int\u00e9rieurs silencieux de Vermeer, la libert\u00e9 de Matisse, la fulgurance de Picasso. Hockney regarde, d\u00e9monte, r\u00e9invente. Il ne copie pas, il dialogue. Il engage une conversation visuelle \u00e0 travers les si\u00e8cles avec ces figures tut\u00e9laires, nourrissant son \u0153uvre sans jamais la figer dans un h\u00e9ritage.<\/h4>\n<h4><strong>La mise en sc\u00e8ne a \u00e9t\u00e9 pens\u00e9e comme une autobiographie visuelle<\/strong><br \/>\nCon\u00e7ue avec Jean-Pierre Gon\u00e7alves de Lima, directeur du studio Hockney, l&#8217;exposition suit un parcours \u00e0 la fois chronologique et th\u00e9matique. Chaque salle d\u00e9ploie un chapitre, une p\u00e9riode, une obsession. Le tout compose une forme d\u2019autobiographie picturale. A plus de 80 ans, l&#8217;artiste cocntinue de dessiner chaque jour. Cette r\u00e9trospective en est la d\u00e9monstration \u00e9clatante.
