La capitale italienne est en pleine ferveur caravagesque. Jamais depuis la mort de Michelangelo Merisi, dit Le Caravage (1571-1610), tant de ses \u0153uvres n\u2019avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9unies dans sa ville d\u2019adoption. L\u2019exposition &#8220;Caravaggio 2025&#8221; au Palazzo Barberini rassemble plus de la moiti\u00e9 de ses peintures connues, soit plus d&#8217;une vingtaine, venues du monde entier. Une occasion unique de plonger dans l\u2019univers incandescent d\u2019un peintre \u00e0 la vie br\u00e8ve, \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153uvre fulgurante. Jusqu&#8217;au 13 juillet.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Une Rome en clair-obscur<\/h3>\n<p>Au c\u0153ur de l\u2019exposition &#8216;Caravage 2025&#8243;, un parcours chronologique retrace la trajectoire du peintre milanais qui r\u00e9volutionna l\u2019art sacr\u00e9. Au Palais Barberini, on d\u00e9couvre le &#8220;Portrait de Maffeo Barberini&#8221; (1598), jamais montr\u00e9 au public avant l\u2019automne dernier. Le futur pape Urbain VIII y appara\u00eet jeune, intense, tendant un bras vers le spectateur comme pour briser les si\u00e8cles. Ce face-\u00e0-face r\u00e9unit deux ambitieux : Caravage a alors 27 ans, Barberini 30. Un portrait audacieux, d\u2019une intimit\u00e9 brute.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">L\u2019accrochage s\u2019ouvre sur une claque visuelle : &#8220;La Conversion de saint Paul&#8221; (1600-01), command\u00e9e puis rejet\u00e9e par le juriste Tiberio Cerasi. La lumi\u00e8re s\u2019y fait de plus en plus rare, les visages plus tendus, l\u2019espace plus resserr\u00e9, comme si la fuite du peintre, apr\u00e8s un meurtre en 1606, contaminait la toile elle-m\u00eame. Caravage peint l\u2019urgence, la chute, la r\u00e9demption, avec un r\u00e9alisme mystique o\u00f9 chaque corps souffre, chaque regard interroge.<\/p>\n<p>Parmi les \u0153uvres marquantes figure le &#8220;Jeune Bacchus malade&#8221; (vers 1593), un autoportrait au sourire fragile r\u00e9alis\u00e9 peu apr\u00e8s son hospitalisation. Ce visage blafard, les l\u00e8vres bleuies, les feuilles de vigne fan\u00e9es contrastent avec l\u2019id\u00e9al classique du Bacchus triomphant. La sensualit\u00e9 y est troubl\u00e9e, presque morbide. C\u2019est l\u2019un des tout premiers t\u00e9moignages de sa mani\u00e8re : une peinture de l\u2019ambigu\u00eft\u00e9, de la chair souffrante. Le voir dans ce contexte renforce l\u2019id\u00e9e d\u2019un Caravage vuln\u00e9rable, hant\u00e9 d\u00e8s le d\u00e9part par la mort.<\/p>\n<h3>Une peinture du doute et du d\u00e9sir<\/h3>\n<p>Ce qui saisit dans ce parcours, c\u2019est la densit\u00e9 humaine. Caravage ne peint pas des id\u00e9es, mais des \u00eatres : des prostitu\u00e9es, des jeunes apprentis, des amants, des pauvres. Ses mod\u00e8les viennent des rues de Rome, et cela se voit. Il transforme les r\u00e9cits sacr\u00e9s en sc\u00e8nes de chair, d\u2019ombres, de blessures. Elle eut comme client et amant le spadassin Ranuccio Tomassoni, celui que Caravage tua en 1606. Elle incarne tour \u00e0 tour sainte Catherine en bleu lapis, Marie-Madeleine en pourpre et m\u00eame Judith, tranchant la t\u00eate d\u2019Holopherne avec une beaut\u00e9 implacable. Avec elle, la narration sacr\u00e9e devient portrait psychologique, th\u00e9\u00e2tre int\u00e9rieur.<\/p>\n<h3>Caravage, in situ<\/h3>\n<p>Quinze autres tableaux majeurs du Caravage, visibles dans leur lieu d\u2019origine, prolongent la c\u00e9l\u00e9bration. \u00c0 l&#8217;\u00e9glise Saint-Louis des Fran\u00e7ais, le cycle de saint Matthieu attire les foules. Il comprend &#8220;La Vocation de saint Matthieu&#8221;, &#8220;L\u2019Inspiration de saint Matthieu&#8221; et &#8220;Le Martyre de saint Matthieu&#8221;, fresques d\u2019autel d\u2019une intensit\u00e9 dramatique rare. Le clair-obscur y devient langage spirituel. C\u2019est l\u00e0 que le jeune Jorge Mario Bergoglio, futur pape Fran\u00e7ois, venait souvent prier. Le Vatican, lui, d\u00e9voile exceptionnellement La Mise au tombeau dans toute sa puissance fun\u00e8bre.<\/p>\n<p>Caravage a eu des suiveurs, des imitateurs, des ennemis. Mais il reste sans \u00e9gal. Son g\u00e9nie fut d\u2019introduire l\u2019incertitude dans l\u2019image sainte, de m\u00ealer l\u2019id\u00e9al au trivial, le sublime au sordide. Rome le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre comme un proph\u00e8te moderne, un peintre du doute et du d\u00e9sir.
