L\u2019histoire de l\u2019art aime les r\u00e9surrections inattendues. Celle-ci a de quoi marquer les esprits : un grand tableau de Laurent de La Hyre (1606-1656), Le banquet des Lapithes<\/em>, a refait surface apr\u00e8s pr\u00e8s de quatre si\u00e8cles d\u2019oubli. Accroch\u00e9 depuis le XIXe si\u00e8cle dans l\u2019escalier du ch\u00e2teau de Villebourgeon en Sologne, il n\u2019avait jamais \u00e9t\u00e9 identifi\u00e9 comme l\u2019\u0153uvre d\u2019un des ma\u00eetres du classicisme fran\u00e7ais. Il est pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 aux ench\u00e8res le 15 novembre 2025 \u00e0 l’H\u00f4tel des ventes Orl\u00e9ans Madeleine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Un chef-d\u2019\u0153uvre du classicisme fran\u00e7ais retrouv\u00e9<\/h3>\n

R\u00e9alis\u00e9e vers 1624-1628, alors que Laurent de La Hyre n\u2019avait pas 20 ans, la toile monumentale (2,04 x 2,70 m) illustre un \u00e9pisode des M\u00e9tamorphoses<\/em> d\u2019Ovide : la bataille entre Centaures et Lapithes, d\u00e9clench\u00e9e lors des noces du roi Pirithoos. Le peintre transpose cette violence mythologique dans un d\u00e9cor d\u2019architecture fastueuse, o\u00f9 l\u2019ivresse et la brutalit\u00e9 s\u2019opposent \u00e0 la mesure et \u00e0 la civilisation.<\/p>\n

Ce choix iconographique rapproche l\u2019artiste de Poussin, qui traite un sujet similaire dans Le Triomphe de Bacchus<\/em> (1624-1625), mais s\u2019en distingue par une dimension plus th\u00e9\u00e2trale et une architecture qui organise l\u2019espace de mani\u00e8re monumentale. Loin du simple exercice d\u2019atelier, le tableau manifeste d\u00e9j\u00e0 une r\u00e9flexion sur la mise en sc\u00e8ne du pouvoir, un th\u00e8me central de la peinture fran\u00e7aise des ann\u00e9es 1620-1630. Il est \u00e9galement tentant aussi de rapprocher Laurent de La Hyre des exp\u00e9riences de Simon Vouet, revenu de Rome en 1627, dont l\u2019influence allait bouleverser la sc\u00e8ne parisienne. Mais l\u00e0 o\u00f9 Vouet amplifie l\u2019emphase baroque, La Hyre recherche d\u00e9j\u00e0 une clart\u00e9 de construction et une sobri\u00e9t\u00e9 expressive qui annoncent la voie classique fran\u00e7aise, aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de Poussin et Le Sueur.<\/p>\n

Une pi\u00e8ce manquante du corpus de Laurent de La Hyre<\/h3>\n

Mentionn\u00e9 dans l\u2019inventaire apr\u00e8s le d\u00e9c\u00e8s du peintre en 1657, le tableau avait disparu des radars jusqu\u2019\u00e0 cette red\u00e9couverte. Pour les historiens, il comble une lacune dans l\u2019\u0153uvre du jeune La Hyre, aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de La Tuile<\/em> et Adonis mort, avec son chien <\/em>(1620), conserv\u00e9s au Louvre. Il t\u00e9moigne d\u2019une p\u00e9riode charni\u00e8re, entre les r\u00e9miniscences mani\u00e9ristes de Fontainebleau et l\u2019\u00e9mergence du baroque parisien.<\/p>\n

Par sa taille monumentale et sa qualit\u00e9 d’ex\u00e9cution, Le banquet des Lapithes<\/em> de Laurent de La Hyre a d\u2019embl\u00e9e la stature d\u2019une \u0153uvre de mus\u00e9e. La vente aux ench\u00e8res d\u2019Orl\u00e9ans du 15 novembre pr\u00e9sente \u00e9galement une centaine d\u2019\u0153uvres flamandes et fran\u00e7aises issues du m\u00eame ch\u00e2teau.<\/p>\n
