Du 10 octobre au 8 f\u00e9vrier 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>En entrant \u00e0 la Serpentine South Gallery de Londres, le visiteur p\u00e9n\u00e8tre dans un espace o\u00f9 la peinture se d\u00e9ploie comme une partition. Les toiles de Peter Doig vibrent de couleurs intenses, travers\u00e9es par des silhouettes suspendues dans des atmosph\u00e8res irr\u00e9elles. L&#8217;\u00c9cossais Peter Doig, 67 ans, est consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme l\u2019un des peintres les plus influents de sa g\u00e9n\u00e9ration. Laur\u00e9at du prestigieux Praemium Imperiale en 2025, il a su imposer une \u0153uvre singuli\u00e8re, \u00e0 la fois figurative et onirique, nourrie de ses voyages entre l\u2019\u00c9cosse, le Canada, Londres et Trinidad. Sa peinture \u00e9chappe aux cat\u00e9gories simplistes : elle ne se veut ni r\u00e9aliste ni abstraite, mais explore l\u2019\u00e9paisseur de la m\u00e9moire et du r\u00eave.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1325\" data-end=\"1768\">L\u2019exposition de la Serpentine ne se contente pas de pr\u00e9senter des \u0153uvres : elle propose un parcours initiatique, une plong\u00e9e dans un univers o\u00f9 les images se nourrissent de la culture musicale et cin\u00e9matographique, des paysages carib\u00e9ens, mais aussi des souvenirs intimes de l\u2019artiste. N\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00c9dimbourg, il grandit d\u2019abord au Canada, avant que sa famille ne s\u2019installe \u00e0 Trinidad, petite \u00eele des Cara\u00efbes qui deviendra plus tard un foyer essentiel de son inspiration. Adolescent, il revient au Canada, o\u00f9 il d\u00e9couvre la peinture et le cin\u00e9ma. Ces ann\u00e9es nord-am\u00e9ricaines marquent profond\u00e9ment son imaginaire : la neige, les for\u00eats, les cabanes perdues au milieu des bois deviennent des motifs r\u00e9currents dans ses premi\u00e8res \u0153uvres. Dans les ann\u00e9es 1980, il choisit Londres pour se former. \u00c0 la Saint Martin\u2019s School of Art puis au Chelsea College of Art, il d\u00e9couvre l\u2019histoire de l\u2019art europ\u00e9en, mais garde la libert\u00e9 de m\u00ealer r\u00e9f\u00e9rences classiques et culture populaire. Contrairement \u00e0 certains de ses contemporains qui s\u2019engagent dans l\u2019art conceptuel, Doig reste fid\u00e8le \u00e0 la peinture, convaincu que ce m\u00e9dium poss\u00e8de encore un potentiel inexplor\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2778\" data-end=\"3174\">Le premier grand succ\u00e8s de Peter Doig survient dans les ann\u00e9es 1990. En 1994, il re\u00e7oit le prestigieux prix John Moores de peinture \u00e0 Liverpool, avec <em data-start=\"2915\" data-end=\"2924\">Blotter (1993, National Museums Liverpool)<\/em>, une toile qui repr\u00e9sente un homme debout sur une \u00e9tendue glac\u00e9e. Cette \u0153uvre, d\u2019apparence simple, condense d\u00e9j\u00e0 l\u2019essence de son art : un personnage solitaire, une atmosph\u00e8re silencieuse, une nature qui devient d\u00e9cor mental plus que paysage r\u00e9el. Le tournant d\u00e9cisif survient au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 2000. Doig d\u00e9cide de s\u2019installer durablement \u00e0 Trinidad. L\u00e0, il d\u00e9couvre une culture foisonnante o\u00f9 la musique, la danse et le carnaval rythment la vie quotidienne. Il fonde avec des amis artistes le <em data-start=\"3425\" data-end=\"3441\">StudioFilmClub<\/em> dans le quartier de Laventille, un espace communautaire o\u00f9 il projette des films sur lesquels il peint ensuite des affiches. Le cin\u00e9ma, d\u00e9j\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent dans son \u0153uvre, prend alors une place centrale. Chaque affiche est un exercice pictural qui dialogue avec le septi\u00e8me art tout en renouvelant son langage plastique.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3759\" data-end=\"4044\">De 2004 \u00e0 2017, Doig enseigne \u00e0 la Kunstakademie de D\u00fcsseldorf, suivant les traces de grands peintres comme Gerhard Richter ou Joseph Beuys. Il y transmet \u00e0 ses \u00e9tudiants une vision ouverte de la peinture, o\u00f9 l\u2019exp\u00e9rimentation compte autant que la fid\u00e9lit\u00e9 aux m\u00e9diums traditionnels. Ses expositions personnelles confirment son statut d\u2019artiste majeur : la Tate Britain en 2008, la Fondation Beyeler en 2014, le Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay en 2023\u20132024 avec <em data-start=\"4206\" data-end=\"4234\">Reflections of the Century<\/em>, o\u00f9 ses toiles dialoguaient avec celles de Gauguin ou Matisse. En 2025, sa carri\u00e8re est couronn\u00e9e par le Praemium Imperiale, souvent qualifi\u00e9 de \u00ab Nobel des arts \u00bb. Ses tableaux ne cherchent pas \u00e0 reproduire la r\u00e9alit\u00e9, mais \u00e0 traduire la m\u00e9moire d\u2019une exp\u00e9rience. L\u2019image devient un espace de r\u00e9sonance, o\u00f9 se superposent souvenirs personnels, r\u00e9f\u00e9rences culturelles et atmosph\u00e8res collectives. Les couleurs sont au c\u0153ur de son langage pictural. Satur\u00e9es, presque irr\u00e9elles, elles transforment les sc\u00e8nes en visions hallucin\u00e9es. Dans certaines toiles, le vert envahit la surface jusqu\u2019\u00e0 noyer les figures, tandis que des bleus profonds ouvrent sur des horizons marins. Ces choix chromatiques ne rel\u00e8vent pas d\u2019un go\u00fbt d\u00e9coratif : ils traduisent une perception int\u00e9rieure, un \u00e9tat de conscience. Le cin\u00e9ma traverse son \u0153uvre comme une obsession. Certaines compositions reprennent le cadrage d\u2019un plan, l\u2019arr\u00eat sur image d\u2019une s\u00e9quence. L\u2019artiste a souvent reconnu l\u2019influence des films de Werner Herzog, de Rainer Werner Fassbinder ou encore des westerns. Pourtant, ses tableaux ne sont jamais des illustrations : ils transposent l\u2019exp\u00e9rience du film dans un langage pictural, jouant sur la suspension du temps.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5755\" data-end=\"6197\">La musique occupe une place tout aussi centrale. Qu\u2019il s\u2019agisse des sound systems de Trinidad, des concerts improvis\u00e9s ou des pochettes de disques, Doig puise dans cet univers sonore une \u00e9nergie visuelle. Ses peintures de musiciens \u2013 souvent anonymes \u2013 ne cherchent pas \u00e0 repr\u00e9senter fid\u00e8lement une sc\u00e8ne, mais \u00e0 capter l\u2019aura du moment. La peinture devient l\u2019\u00e9quivalent d\u2019une improvisation musicale, une partition de couleurs et de formes. Les motifs r\u00e9currents r\u00e9v\u00e8lent une cartographie intime : la neige du Canada, les for\u00eats \u00e9cossaises, les plages de Trinidad, les lions sculpt\u00e9s de Port of Spain. Ces \u00e9l\u00e9ments ne sont jamais r\u00e9alistes, mais investis d\u2019une force symbolique. Ainsi, les lions de Trinidad deviennent dans son \u0153uvre des figures de r\u00e9sistance et de spiritualit\u00e9, \u00e9chos lointains aux sphinx de l\u2019Antiquit\u00e9 ou aux fauves des ar\u00e8nes europ\u00e9ennes. En cela, Doig s\u2019inscrit dans une lign\u00e9e de peintres qui ont explor\u00e9 la fronti\u00e8re entre r\u00e9alit\u00e9 et r\u00eave : Edvard Munch, Edward Hopper, Pierre Bonnard. Mais il se distingue par son m\u00e9lange unique de r\u00e9f\u00e9rences populaires et savantes, et par son attachement au quotidien transfigur\u00e9 en vision po\u00e9tique.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7244\" data-end=\"7664\">Parmi les \u0153uvres phares, on retrouve <em data-start=\"7281\" data-end=\"7329\">Painting for Wall Painters (Prosperity P.O.S.)<\/em>, une toile monumentale inspir\u00e9e par les enseignes color\u00e9es de Port of Spain. Avec <em data-start=\"7412\" data-end=\"7433\">Music of the Future<\/em>, Doig s\u2019empare de la figure du musicien comme proph\u00e8te, une silhouette suspendue dans un champ de couleurs \u00e9lectriques. Dans <em data-start=\"7559\" data-end=\"7568\">Maracas<\/em>, la plage carib\u00e9enne devient le th\u00e9\u00e2tre d\u2019une sc\u00e8ne ambigu\u00eb, entre f\u00eate et inqui\u00e9tude sourde. <em data-start=\"7666\" data-end=\"7680\">Speaker\/Girl<\/em> condense \u00e0 elle seule l\u2019esprit de l\u2019exposition : une jeune femme pos\u00e9e \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 d\u2019une enceinte sonore, entre sensualit\u00e9 et myst\u00e8re. Le haut-parleur, motif r\u00e9current dans ses toiles, symbolise l\u2019appel de la musique mais aussi la promesse d\u2019une voix lointaine, peut-\u00eatre inaudible. Des vinyles, cassettes et enceintes Western Electric restaur\u00e9es ponctuent le parcours, comme des \u00e9chos mat\u00e9riels de l\u2019univers sonore de Trinidad. Sans verser dans le spectaculaire, l\u2019exposition instaure un climat de r\u00e9sonance, o\u00f9 chaque tableau semble r\u00e9sonner comme un instrument.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8679\" data-end=\"9055\"><em data-start=\"8679\" data-end=\"8695\">House of Music<\/em> illustre la mani\u00e8re dont Doig int\u00e8gre la culture carib\u00e9enne dans son art. Les sound systems, embl\u00e8mes des quartiers populaires de Port of Spain, deviennent dans sa peinture des motifs universels. La m\u00e9moire intime de l\u2019artiste se transforme en m\u00e9moire collective, offrant aux visiteurs une exp\u00e9rience qui d\u00e9passe les fronti\u00e8res g\u00e9ographiques et culturelles. La musique joue ici un r\u00f4le fondamental. Elle n\u2019est pas seulement un th\u00e8me, mais une m\u00e9thode : ses tableaux se construisent comme des compositions, o\u00f9 les motifs se r\u00e9p\u00e8tent, se varient, s\u2019improvisent. Peindre devient l\u2019\u00e9quivalent d\u2019une improvisation jazz ou d\u2019un mix de DJ : une mani\u00e8re de cr\u00e9er des passages entre des univers h\u00e9t\u00e9rog\u00e8nes. En cela, Doig \u00e9chappe aux cat\u00e9gories du march\u00e9 de l\u2019art. Son \u0153uvre, recherch\u00e9e par les collectionneurs, ne se laisse pourtant pas r\u00e9duire \u00e0 une esth\u00e9tique d\u00e9corative. Elle conserve une force intempestive, au sens o\u00f9 Nietzsche parlait de l\u2019\u00ab intempestif \u00bb : une capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 r\u00e9sister \u00e0 la mode tout en dialoguant avec le pr\u00e9sent.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10605\" data-end=\"11024\">Avec <em data-start=\"10610\" data-end=\"10626\">House of Music<\/em>, la Serpentine offre bien plus qu\u2019une r\u00e9trospective : elle propose une immersion dans l\u2019univers d\u2019un peintre qui a fait de la m\u00e9moire et de la musique les piliers de son art. L\u2019exposition r\u00e9v\u00e8le la coh\u00e9rence d\u2019un parcours marqu\u00e9 par le d\u00e9placement, entre l\u2019Europe, l\u2019Am\u00e9rique du Nord et les Cara\u00efbes, et la capacit\u00e9 d\u2019un artiste \u00e0 transformer ses exp\u00e9riences personnelles en images universelles. \u00c0 travers ses toiles, Peter Doig rappelle que la peinture peut encore \u00eatre un lieu de r\u00e9sonance. En lui consacrant <em data-start=\"11467\" data-end=\"11483\">House of Music<\/em>, la Serpentine confirme son r\u00f4le de laboratoire artistique : un lieu o\u00f9 les formes se rencontrent, o\u00f9 la peinture s\u2019ouvre \u00e0 l\u2019univers sonore.
