C\u2019est l\u00e0 que r\u00e9side la justesse du choix d\u2019Alfred Pacquement, commissaire de l\u2019exposition <em data-start=\"847\" data-end=\"876\">Soulages, une autre lumi\u00e8re<\/em>. Alfred Pacquement, commissaire de l&#8217;exposition, le rappelle avec pr\u00e9cision : \u00ab L\u2019\u0153uvre sur papier a \u00e9t\u00e9 moins souvent montr\u00e9e que les peintures sur toile. \u00bb Alfred Pacquement conna\u00eet Soulages de longue date. En 2009, il avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 con\u00e7u la grande r\u00e9trospective du Centre Pompidou. Son retour \u00e0 ce corpus intime, au Mus\u00e9e du Luxembourg, a valeur de continuit\u00e9 et d\u2019hommage. Directeur honoraire du Mus\u00e9e national d\u2019art moderne, Alfred Pacquement n\u2019aborde pas Soulages en conservateur distant, mais en compagnon de route. Il privil\u00e9gie la clart\u00e9 et le d\u00e9pouillement : des cimaises sobres, une sc\u00e9nographie fluide pens\u00e9e avec V\u00e9ronique Dollfus.<\/p>\n<h3>La modestie du papier<\/h3>\n<p>Chronologique mais a\u00e9r\u00e9, le parcours s\u2019\u00e9tend des premiers fusains de 1946 aux derni\u00e8res \u0153uvres sur papier de 2004. Chaque salle r\u00e9v\u00e8le un moment d\u2019inflexion dans le rapport de Soulages \u00e0 la mati\u00e8re. Le geste rageur de l\u2019apr\u00e8s-guerre, la tension abstraite des ann\u00e9es 1950, la verticalit\u00e9 ample des ann\u00e9es 1970, puis l\u2019\u00e9pure quasi m\u00e9ditative des derni\u00e8res encres. Pacquement assume un parti pris : celui d\u2019un dialogue entre les \u00e9poques. Les papiers s\u2019\u00e9clairent mutuellement. Le visiteur circule d\u2019une d\u00e9cennie \u00e0 l\u2019autre comme on suit une respiration. Sous son commissariat, la notion de hi\u00e9rarchie s\u2019efface. Pierre Soulages refusait de distinguer toile, papier ou bronze. \u00ab Chaque mat\u00e9riau m\u2019impose sa logique propre. \u00bb Pacquement prend cette affirmation de l&#8217;artiste au pied de la lettre. Ses premiers papiers, au fusain, t\u00e9moignent d\u2019une \u00e9nergie brute. Des signes inscrits dans l\u2019espace plus que des formes dessin\u00e9es. Tr\u00e8s vite, le brou de noix s\u2019impose comme une \u00e9vidence. La transparence et l\u2019opacit\u00e9 s\u2019y affrontent. L\u2019eau dilue la densit\u00e9 du pigment. Le pinceau est parfois remplac\u00e9 par des brosses de peintre en b\u00e2timent. Soulages y d\u00e9couvre ce qu\u2019il nommera plus tard \u00ab le battement des formes dans l\u2019espace \u00bb. Alfred Pacquement choisit d\u2019exposer des \u0153uvres de fondation. L\u2019artiste est encore proche des surr\u00e9alistes, expos\u00e9 par hasard aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s d\u2019Hartung ou Domela en Allemagne en 1948.<\/p>\n<h3>Une pr\u00e9sence active<\/h3>\n<p>La blancheur du papier devient le lieu d\u2019un dialogue constant avec les zones sombres. Pacquement souligne cette tension : \u00ab Chez Soulages, le blanc n\u2019est pas vide : il est silence, espace de r\u00e9sonance. \u00bb Dans la sc\u00e9nographie, les \u0153uvres respirent. Les marges, laiss\u00e9es visibles, font vibrer la mati\u00e8re ; le spectateur est invit\u00e9 \u00e0 circuler dans l\u2019intervalle, \u00e0 sentir l\u2019air entre les formes. \u00ab J\u2019aime l\u2019autorit\u00e9 du noir, sa gravit\u00e9, son \u00e9vidence, sa radicalit\u00e9. Son puissant pouvoir de contraste donne une pr\u00e9sence intense \u00e0 toutes les couleurs \u00bb, d\u00e9clare Pierre Soulages.<\/p>\n<h3>L&#8217;autorit\u00e9 du noir<\/h3>\n<p>Alfred Pacquement montre que l\u2019artiste a toujours cherch\u00e9 dans le papier un espace plus fragile, plus poreux, o\u00f9 la lumi\u00e8re se faufile autrement. En effet, dans les ann\u00e9es 1950, les gouaches et encres sur papier s\u2019\u00e9loignent du brou de noix ; elles s\u2019ouvrent \u00e0 des rythmes plus amples. L\u2019eau devient mati\u00e8re, le geste se fait plus a\u00e9rien. Certaines \u0153uvres de 1954 ou 1957, maroufl\u00e9es sur toile, r\u00e9v\u00e8lent une densit\u00e9 qu\u2019on associerait volontiers \u00e0 la gravure. L&#8217;\u00e9crivain Michel Ragon, qui fut l\u2019un des premiers \u00e0 \u00e9crire sur Soulages, notait d\u00e8s 1962 : \u00ab Nous disons peintures sur papier, car il ne s\u2019agit pas de dessins. \u00bb La formule, reprise dans l\u2019exposition, trouve ici tout son sens.<\/p>\n<h3><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5366 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/great-artmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/PHOTO-2025-10-08-15-28-36.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/great-artmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/PHOTO-2025-10-08-15-28-36.jpg 700w, https:\/\/great-artmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/PHOTO-2025-10-08-15-28-36-300x279.jpg 300w, https:\/\/great-artmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/PHOTO-2025-10-08-15-28-36-452x420.jpg 452w, https:\/\/great-artmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/PHOTO-2025-10-08-15-28-36-696x646.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 384px) 100vw, 384px\" \/>L&#8217;humanisation du monde<\/h3>\n<p>\u00c0 la fin du parcours, les \u0153uvres des ann\u00e9es 1990 et 2000 frappent par leur silence. Soulages a alors 85 ans, mais son geste reste d\u2019une rigueur absolue. Sur papier, il revient au brou de noix comme un adieu \u00e0 la source. Les grandes feuilles horizontales de 1999 ou 2003 laissent appara\u00eetre des bandes brunes travers\u00e9es de lumi\u00e8re. L\u2019encre, arrach\u00e9e ou d\u00e9pos\u00e9e par empreinte, cr\u00e9e des zones d\u2019ombre instables. Soulages est mort en 2022, \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e2ge de 102 ans. L\u2019hommage du Louvre, puis celui du Mus\u00e9e du Luxembourg, prennent valeur de c\u00e9l\u00e9bration. Face \u00e0 ces papiers, on comprend qu\u2019il ne s\u2019agissait pas d\u2019un programme mais d\u2019un \u00e9tat d\u2019\u00eatre.
