Une vibration lente, qui parcourt la surface des toiles comme une onde souterraine. Dans la grande r\u00e9trospective que lui consacre la Fondation Louis Vuitton, cette pulsation devient lisible. L\u2019exposition d\u00e9ploie 60 ans d\u2019un dialogue entre le silence et la mati\u00e8re. Une peinture qui s\u2019avance avec la rigueur d\u2019un compositeur. Richter, \u00e0 93 ans, peint encore le monde en musicien de l\u2019incertitude. Le compositeur am\u00e9ricain inventait des syst\u00e8mes pour que la musique advienne. Il imposait au chaos des conditions pour qu\u2019il puisse s&#8217;exprimer. Chez Richter, la peinture devient une machine \u00e0 produire de l\u2019impr\u00e9vu. Une \u201cspontan\u00e9it\u00e9 calcul\u00e9e\u201d, selon le mot que Cage aurait pu lui appliquer. La s\u00e9rie &#8220;Cage&#8221; (2006) est un hommage explicite au compositeur. Chaque raclage de couleur est une note tenue. Chaque effacement, une mesure de silence. Des premiers flous photographiques aux abstractions monumentales. Puis, des portraits gris aux vibrations color\u00e9es des <em>Strip<\/em>. Enfin, jusqu\u2019aux dessins r\u00e9cents, derniers souffles du regard. Cette continuit\u00e9, la conservatrice Suzanne Pag\u00e9 la d\u00e9crit comme \u201cune peinture encore possible\u201d. Une mani\u00e8re de dire que Richter ne cesse de rouvrir la question du visible.<\/p>\n<h3>Avant tout, le rythme<\/h3>\n<p>Richter compose avec la r\u00e9p\u00e9tition, la variation, la suspension. Il peint comme Cage composait. En laissant le mat\u00e9riau parler, en acceptant que la forme se d\u00e9couvre d\u2019elle-m\u00eame. Chaque toile est un champ d\u2019exp\u00e9rience o\u00f9 la couleur s\u2019improvise sous des contraintes strictes. Dans les <em>Abstrakte Bilder<\/em> des ann\u00e9es 1980, les couches se r\u00e9pondent comme des accords dissonants. La libert\u00e9 est construite. Richter d\u00e9place le pinceau comme un musicien joue avec le temps. Comment atteindre un point de tension o\u00f9 l\u2019\u0153uvre semble s\u2019auto-g\u00e9n\u00e9rer. Dans les Cage, tout proc\u00e8de de ces gestes recompos\u00e9s. La mati\u00e8re vibre sans qu\u2019on sache si elle avance ou recule. L\u2019\u0153il se perd dans la profondeur du pigment, comme dans une \u00e9coute prolong\u00e9e de sons \u00e9tir\u00e9s. Cage disait : \u201cJe n\u2019ai rien \u00e0 dire et je le dis.\u201d Richter pourrait r\u00e9pondre : \u201cJe n\u2019ai rien \u00e0 montrer et je le montre.\u201d Comme dans ce tableau ci-contre, &#8220;<\/span><em style=\"font-family: Verdana, BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">September<\/em><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">&#8221; (2005), au format d&#8217;un t\u00e9l\u00e9viseur 16\/9e. L&#8217;oeuvre illustre l&#8217;attentat du 11 septembre 2001. On reconna\u00eet les Twins towers sur le point de s&#8217;effondrer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Le flou comme respiration<\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #222222; font-family: Verdana, BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif; font-size: 15px;\">Chez Richter, le flou, loin d\u2019\u00eatre un effet, est une respiration. Il suspend la signification, introduit le doute, d\u00e9place le regard vers une zone d\u2019instabilit\u00e9. L\u2019image cesse d\u2019\u00eatre souvenir ou t\u00e9moignage pour devenir vibration. Loin du pathos, l&#8217;artiste installe une distance qui amplifie l\u2019\u00e9motion. La grisaille devient un ton majeur dans sa partition. Les Graue Bilder, ces peintures neutres des ann\u00e9es 1970, constituent une mani\u00e8re de silence visuel. Elles rappellent la pi\u00e8ce <em>4\u201933\u2019<\/em>\u2019 de John Cage. Rien ne se passe, et pourtant tout advient dans l\u2019attention. Chaque nuance contient la promesse d\u2019un spectre.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Le parcours agit comme un morceau polyphonique. Les grands formats abstraits succ\u00e8dent aux portraits fig\u00e9s. On passe d\u2019une salle \u00e0 l\u2019autre comme d\u2019un tempo \u00e0 un autre. Rien n\u2019est fig\u00e9, tout oscille. Ce mouvement perp\u00e9tuel, Richter le travaille depuis toujours : il peint pour maintenir la vibration, pour emp\u00eacher l\u2019image de se fermer. Ses toiles ne d\u00e9crivent pas le monde, elles en prolongent la fr\u00e9quence.<\/p>\n<h3>Deux p\u00f4les : l\u2019ordre et le chaos<\/h3>\n<p>Bach construit la perfection du syst\u00e8me. Cage, le non-syst\u00e8me qui engendre la libert\u00e9. Richter navigue entre les deux. Son sens du rythme proc\u00e8de de cette oscillation : jamais tout \u00e0 fait sym\u00e9trique, jamais compl\u00e8tement d\u00e9sordonn\u00e9. Chaque toile cherche son accord juste. Le peintre \u00e9coute la peinture. C\u2019est en ce sens que ses \u0153uvres sont vibratoires : elles ne se lisent pas, elles se per\u00e7oivent. Le sujet, indicible, se dissout dans la mati\u00e8re. Tout l\u2019art de Richter repose sur la tension entre distance et intensit\u00e9. Le flou, le gris, l\u2019effacement ne sont pas des refus, mais des formes d\u2019attention. L\u2019artiste cherche un point d\u2019\u00e9quilibre o\u00f9 l\u2019\u00e9motion ne d\u00e9borde pas la forme. Ce contr\u00f4le extr\u00eame n\u2019annule pas la spontan\u00e9it\u00e9, il la rend possible. Comme Cage, Richter cr\u00e9e les conditions de l\u2019impr\u00e9visible. Les bandes de couleur (photo d&#8217;ouverture), g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9es num\u00e9riquement, \u00e9voquent \u00e0 la fois le vitrail de Cologne et le flux num\u00e9rique : une musique visuelle du XXIe si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019expression \u201cspontan\u00e9it\u00e9 calcul\u00e9e\u201d r\u00e9sume toute la m\u00e9thode de Richter. Elle \u00e9claire cette tension entre hasard et ma\u00eetrise qui fonde son rapport au monde. L\u2019artiste ne cherche ni \u00e0 imposer sa volont\u00e9 ni \u00e0 s\u2019effacer compl\u00e8tement : il orchestre. Il laisse la mati\u00e8re produire ses propres rythmes, mais selon une structure pens\u00e9e, r\u00e9gl\u00e9e, minutieuse.
