Charles Lapicque, que l\u2019on croyait pur produit de la science et de l\u2019avant-garde fran\u00e7aise, est en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 le petit-fils de Severiano de Heredia, premier homme noir pr\u00e9sident du Conseil municipal de Paris et ministre de la Troisi\u00e8me R\u00e9publique. Derri\u00e8re la clart\u00e9 de ses toiles \u00e9clatantes, une autre lumi\u00e8re se r\u00e9v\u00e8le : celle d\u2019une m\u00e9moire m\u00e9tiss\u00e9e, effac\u00e9e puis retrouv\u00e9e.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5421 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/great-artmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/paul_estrade_severiano-de-heredia.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/great-artmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/paul_estrade_severiano-de-heredia.jpg 600w, https:\/\/great-artmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/paul_estrade_severiano-de-heredia-215x300.jpg 215w, https:\/\/great-artmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/paul_estrade_severiano-de-heredia-301x420.jpg 301w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/>N\u00e9 \u00e0 La Havane en 1836, fils d\u2019un planteur blanc et d\u2019une m\u00e8re mul\u00e2tresse libre, Severiano de Heredia grandit \u00e0 Paris, devient un \u00e9l\u00e8ve brillant du lyc\u00e9e Louis-le-Grand et s\u2019engage dans le camp r\u00e9publicain radical. Pr\u00e9sident du Conseil municipal en 1879, puis ministre des Travaux publics en 1887, il incarne l\u2019id\u00e9al m\u00e9ritocratique et anticl\u00e9rical d\u2019une R\u00e9publique en construction. Mais sa nomination provoque une d\u00e9ferlante raciste : la presse le ridiculise, l\u2019affuble de surnoms humiliants et nie sa l\u00e9gitimit\u00e9 politique. Ruin\u00e9 et oubli\u00e9, il meurt en 1901. Son effacement accompagne la mont\u00e9e du colonialisme fran\u00e7ais, son existence, celle d\u2019un homme noir \u00e9duqu\u00e9, libre et ministre, contredisant la \u201cmission civilisatrice\u201d que la France brandissait alors en Afrique et aux Antilles. Aujourd\u2019hui, des chercheurs et des \u00e9lus comme l&#8217;ancien d\u00e9put\u00e9 Fran\u00e7ois-Michel Lambert s\u2019efforcent de r\u00e9habiliter ce r\u00e9publicain d\u2019avant-garde, d\u00e9fenseur de l\u2019instruction publique, du droit des femmes et de la la\u00efcit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>C\u2019est dans cette lign\u00e9e que s\u2019inscrit son petit-fils Charles Lapicque (1898\u20131988). Issu d\u2019une dynastie de savants \u2014 son p\u00e8re Louis et sa m\u00e8re Marcelle de Heredia furent de grands physiologistes \u2014 il transpose dans la peinture les principes de la perception visuelle. Mais au-del\u00e0 de la science, Lapicque est un po\u00e8te de la couleur. Son univers pictural, souvent qualifi\u00e9 de \u201clumi\u00e8re mentale\u201d, d\u00e9ploie une gamme flamboyante o\u00f9 les rouges de corail, les bleus \u00e9lectriques et les jaunes solaires s\u2019entrechoquent dans un \u00e9quilibre vibrant. Ses marines, ses chevaux, ses visages baignent dans une lumi\u00e8re presque tropicale, o\u00f9 la chaleur et la clart\u00e9 semblent avoir une origine int\u00e9rieure.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cJe cherche la lumi\u00e8re non pas du soleil, mais de l\u2019esprit\u201d, Charles Lapicque (1952)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On peut d\u00e9sormais lire ces mots autrement. L\u2019\u00e9clat solaire qui traverse ses toiles semble h\u00e9riter, \u00e0 distance, du rayonnement carib\u00e9en et de la libert\u00e9 intellectuelle de son grand-p\u00e8re. L\u2019\u00e9nergie color\u00e9e de Lapicque devient la m\u00e9taphore d\u2019un h\u00e9ritage refoul\u00e9, celui d\u2019un homme que l\u2019histoire officielle avait rel\u00e9gu\u00e9 dans l\u2019ombre. Marin, scientifique et r\u00e9sistant, l&#8217;artiste fut lui aussi un insoumis. Son \u0153uvre, \u00e0 mi-chemin entre abstraction et figuration, s\u2019oppose \u00e0 toute \u00e9cole. Il rejette le dogme du cubisme comme celui de l\u2019expressionnisme. Sa peinture cherche un espace libre, o\u00f9 la lumi\u00e8re r\u00e9invente le monde plut\u00f4t qu\u2019elle ne le d\u00e9crit. Le critique Jean Cassou voyait en lui \u201cun peintre de la clart\u00e9 int\u00e9rieure, de la r\u00e9conciliation entre l\u2019\u0153il et l\u2019\u00e2me\u201d. On comprend mieux aujourd\u2019hui la port\u00e9e de cette intuition : Lapicque r\u00e9concilie en effet deux lign\u00e9es, celle du savant rationaliste et celle du politique visionnaire, celle du Nord et du Sud, du laboratoire et de la mer.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 l&#8217;origine de cette r\u00e9v\u00e9lation, l&#8217;historien Paul estrade, auteur d&#8217;une biographie de Severiano de Heredia parue aux <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lesindessavantes.com\/ouvrage\/severiano-de-heredia\/\">Indes Savantes<\/a> en 2011, et Patrick Rollot, pr\u00e9sident de l&#8217;association <a href=\"https:\/\/histoirepatrimoine-paris17.org\/\">Histoire et Patrimoine de Paris 17e<\/a>. La filiation entre Lapicque et Heredia r\u00e9unit deux formes d\u2019\u00e9mancipation : politique et artistique. Le premier a tent\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9clairer la R\u00e9publique ; le second a \u00e9clair\u00e9 la toile. Tous deux ont affront\u00e9, chacun \u00e0 sa mani\u00e8re, les limites du regard : l\u2019un contre les pr\u00e9jug\u00e9s, l\u2019autre contre l\u2019opacit\u00e9 du visible. Aujourd\u2019hui, alors que les mus\u00e9es red\u00e9couvrent Lapicque pour sa libert\u00e9 chromatique et son influence sur la peinture d\u2019apr\u00e8s-guerre, la r\u00e9v\u00e9lation de cette ascendance cubaine redonne un sens profond \u00e0 son \u0153uvre.
