L\u2019Arpenteur] &#8220;L\u2019\u00c9pitaphe&#8221; de F\u00e9lix Macherez"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Il y a, au c\u0153ur de <em>L\u2019\u00c9pitaphe<\/em>, paru en mars 2026 aux \u00e9ditions L&#8217;Arpenteur, une id\u00e9e \u00e0 la fois d\u00e9risoire et vertigineuse : trouver la phrase parfaite \u00e0 graver sur sa pierre tombale. Car l\u2019important n\u2019est pas de mourir &#8211; cela, apr\u00e8s tout, n\u2019a rien d\u2019original &#8211; mais de r\u00e9ussir sa sortie. Chez F\u00e9lix Macherez, qui s\u2019\u00e9tait fait conna\u00eetre avec deux textes d\u00e9j\u00e0 hant\u00e9s par les marges (<em>Au pays des r\u00eaves noirs<\/em> et <em>Les trois pyl\u00f4nes<\/em>), la mort est avant tout un probl\u00e8me de style.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Le dispositif de ce court r\u00e9cit, faussement estampill\u00e9 \u00ab roman \u00bb, est d\u2019une simplicit\u00e9 trompeuse. Cid Sabacqs, trente-trois ans, se retire du monde pour trouver cette phrase ultime qui donnerait enfin un sens et une forme \u00e0 sa vie. Mais contrairement \u00e0 ce que pourrait laisser pr\u00e9sager son pr\u00e9nom h\u00e9ro\u00efque, ce Cid-l\u00e0 r\u00e8gne sur un royaume absent. Son monde est vide, \u00e9croul\u00e9 sous l\u2019ennui. Lui-m\u00eame n\u2019est plus qu\u2019un \u00ab fervent de l\u2019enfermement et de la position fixe \u00bb, passant ses heures \u00e0 \u00ab s\u2019\u00e9couter \u00e2ger \u00bb jusqu\u2019\u00e0 laisser germer en lui l\u2019id\u00e9e du suicide. Une id\u00e9e qui, selon F\u00e9lix Macherez, ne pouvait \u00eatre qu\u2019 originelle (\u00ab Je suis Cid \u00bb\u2026 \u00e0 prononcer \u00e0 haute voix pour comprendre). Alors il rature, recommence, multiplie les versions, comme si chaque tentative devait contenir \u00e0 la fois le sens d\u2019une vie et son effacement. Mais tr\u00e8s vite, le projet se fissure : non seulement aucune formule ne convient, mais c\u2019est l\u2019id\u00e9e m\u00eame de conclusion qui devient suspecte. Que reste-t-il alors lorsque l\u2019on \u00e9choue \u00e0 trouver la derni\u00e8re phrase ?<\/p>\n<p>Pour autant, <em>L\u2019\u00c9pitaphe<\/em> n\u2019a rien d\u2019 une m\u00e9ditation grave sur la mort. Le livre tient m\u00eame de la farce, \u00e0 l\u2019image de ces employ\u00e9s des pompes fun\u00e8bres press\u00e9s d\u2019en finir avec un Cid \u00e9ternellement insatisfait et transfigur\u00e9s en comit\u00e9 de lecture, votant \u00e0 mains lev\u00e9es pour la bonne formule. Rien de tragique dans ce personnage, qui appara\u00eet plut\u00f4t comme une figure ironique, grin\u00e7ante et dot\u00e9e d\u2019une lucidit\u00e9 qui confine au burlesque. On s\u2019amuse d\u2019ailleurs d\u00e9couvrir la cinquantaine d\u2019\u00e9pitaphes que F\u00e9lix Macherez a glan\u00e9 chez les moralistes ou en arpentant les all\u00e9es des cimeti\u00e8res parisiens : \u00ab Mon cadavre est \u00e0 point, retournez-le ! \u00bb ; \u00ab En cours d\u2019instruction : la mort m\u2019apprend son m\u00e9tier \u00bb ;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00ab L\u2019envers vaut mieux que l\u2019endroit \u2013 vous verrez par vous-m\u00eames \u00bb<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>F\u00e9lix Macherez, r\u00e9dacteur en chef des pages Livres du magazine <em>Art Press<\/em>, d\u00e9place la question existentielle vers la question de l\u2019\u00e9criture elle-m\u00eame. \u00c9crire son \u00e9pitaphe, c\u2019est supposer qu\u2019il existe un point final, une formule capable de contenir tout le reste. Or tout, ici, travaille \u00e0 d\u00e9montrer l\u2019inverse. Les phrases prolif\u00e8rent, se contredisent, s\u2019\u00e9puisent. Le texte devient une surface satur\u00e9e d\u2019essais, exhibant ses coutures, ses rat\u00e9s, ses reprises. Pour F\u00e9lix Macherez, l\u2019\u00e9criture tourne autour de son impossibilit\u00e9 de donner du sens. Ce qui se dessine, en filigrane, c\u2019est peut-\u00eatre moins un texte sur la mort qu\u2019un essai sur l\u2019\u00e9puisement des formes litt\u00e9raires. A travers le personnage d\u2019Ernest Wat, un \u00e9crivain rat\u00e9 que Cid interroge en vain pour trouver la bonne formule, F\u00e9lix Macherez ne cache d\u2019ailleurs pas sa critique des auteurs contemporains dont les livres sont jug\u00e9s sans style. Cid parviendra-t-il toutefois \u00e0 trouver la formule ultime ?
