Le tableau repr\u00e9sentant le si\u00e8ge de Yorktown illustre l&#8217;aide d\u00e9cisive de la France pour l&#8217;ind\u00e9pendance des \u00c9tats-Unis. La toile d&#8217;Auguste Couder (1789-1873) raconte un tournant historique. Elle t\u00e9moigne aussi de la volont\u00e9 politique d&#8217;un roi de France au XIXe si\u00e8cle.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"2\">Un peintre d\u2019histoire au service de la m\u00e9moire<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"3\">Louis-Charles-Auguste Couder a peint <em>Le Si\u00e8ge de Yorktown<\/em> en 1836. Pour cette composition, le peintre d&#8217;histoire a choisi de figer un moment de haute tension diplomatique et militaire. Il met en sc\u00e8ne le g\u00e9n\u00e9ral Rochambeau et George Washington. Les deux hommes pr\u00e9parent l&#8217;assaut final de la guerre d&#8217;Ind\u00e9pendance am\u00e9ricaine. Le marquis de La Fayette appara\u00eet sur la toile. Couder soigne chaque d\u00e9tail des uniformes et des attitudes. Son pinceau exprime la fraternit\u00e9 d&#8217;armes entre les deux nations.<\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"4\">La commande royale de Louis-Philippe<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5\">Le ch\u00e2teau de Versailles a directement command\u00e9 l&#8217;\u0153uvre \u00e0 l&#8217;artiste. En 1833, le roi Louis-Philippe d\u00e9cide de transformer le ch\u00e2teau. Il souhaite cr\u00e9er un mus\u00e9e d\u00e9di\u00e9 \u00e0 toutes les gloires de la France. Le souverain veut ainsi r\u00e9concilier les Fran\u00e7ais autour de leur pass\u00e9. Il ordonne la cr\u00e9ation de la Galerie des Batailles. Louis-Philippe choisit personnellement les \u00e9v\u00e9nements repr\u00e9sent\u00e9s. Le roi commande la toile \u00e0 Auguste Couder pour c\u00e9l\u00e9brer la contribution fran\u00e7aise \u00e0 la naissance des \u00c9tats-Unis.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div id=\"model-response-message-contentr_4221ad775eff195f\" class=\"markdown markdown-main-panel enable-luminous-fast-follows enable-updated-hr-color\" dir=\"ltr\" aria-live=\"off\" aria-busy=\"false\">\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"5\">Ce que montre <em>Le Si\u00e8ge de Yorktown<\/em><\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\">La toile immortalise les derniers instants de la guerre d&#8217;Ind\u00e9pendance am\u00e9ricaine en octobre 1781, juste avant la capitulation des troupes britanniques de Lord Cornwallis. Le tableau met magnifiquement en sc\u00e8ne la coop\u00e9ration militaire franco-am\u00e9ricaine :<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"7\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7,0,0\">Au centre : Le g\u00e9n\u00e9ral fran\u00e7ais Rochambeau et le g\u00e9n\u00e9ral am\u00e9ricain George Washington se tiennent c\u00f4te \u00e0 c\u00f4te devant une tente de commandement. Ils donnent leurs derniers ordres pour l&#8217;assaut final. Rochambeau, au c\u0153ur de l&#8217;action, pointe le doigt vers le champ de bataille pour indiquer la strat\u00e9gie.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7,1,0\">\u00c0 gauche : On reconna\u00eet le marquis de La Fayette, v\u00eatu de l&#8217;uniforme am\u00e9ricain, en train de saluer.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7,2,0\">Le d\u00e9cor : \u00c0 l&#8217;arri\u00e8re-plan, les troupes alli\u00e9es (fran\u00e7aises et am\u00e9ricaines) se d\u00e9ploient, tandis que la fum\u00e9e des canons enveloppe le paysage de Yorktown.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"8\">D&#8217;autres \u0153uvres illustrent l&#8217;aide de la France aux Etats-Unis<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9\">Si la toile d&#8217;Auguste Couder est la r\u00e9f\u00e9rence en France, d&#8217;autres tableaux majeurs illustrent cette alliance historique :<\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\" data-path-to-node=\"10\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10,0,0\">\u00ab La Reddition de Lord Cornwallis \u00bb (John Trumbull, 1820) : Conserv\u00e9e au Capitole \u00e0 Washington, cette \u0153uvre am\u00e9ricaine montre l&#8217;arm\u00e9e fran\u00e7aise (\u00e0 gauche, sous la banni\u00e8re blanche royale) et l&#8217;arm\u00e9e am\u00e9ricaine (\u00e0 droite) encadrant les officiers britanniques vaincus.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10,1,0\">\u00ab La Fayette et Washington \u00e0 Mount Vernon \u00bb (Thomas Prichard Rossiter, 1859) : Une \u0153uvre plus intimiste qui montre la profonde amiti\u00e9 liant le jeune marquis fran\u00e7ais au futur premier pr\u00e9sident des \u00c9tats-Unis.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"6\">Galerie des Batailles : une \u0153uvre visible par le public<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\">Le tableau n&#8217;a presque jamais quitt\u00e9 son \u00e9crin d&#8217;origine. Il est toujours expos\u00e9 au public dans la Galerie des Batailles. C&#8217;est la plus grande salle du ch\u00e2teau de Versailles. La toile d&#8217;Auguste Couder y occupe une place de choix parmi 33 autres fresques guerri\u00e8res. Les visiteurs du monde entier peuvent admirer ce chef-d&#8217;\u0153uvre chaque jour.
