Verdier] \u00ab Vers les \u00eeles \u00e9parses \u00bb d&#8217;Olivier Rolin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Voil\u00e0 un livre bref qui, pour \u00eatre appr\u00e9ci\u00e9, doit se savourer comme un vieux porto un peu r\u00eache sur le pont d&#8217;un navire : avec beaucoup de plaisir et une pointe d&#8217;amertume. Dans Vers les \u00eeles \u00c9parses, Olivier Rolin propose un carnet de voyage consignant sa travers\u00e9e vers ces confettis fran\u00e7ais de l\u2019oc\u00e9an Indien (Europa, Juan de Nova, Glorieuses, Tromelin). Surtout, il y livre des notes bien plus intimes : le portrait d\u2019un \u00e9crivain qui, \u00e0 79 ans, regarde avec surprise refluer sa jeunesse, c\u00e9dant la place au calme blanc de la vieillesse.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Les \u00eeles \u00c9parses sont des bouts de sable, de corail et de vent, interdits d\u2019acc\u00e8s au commun des mortels. Il n\u2019y subsiste que de minuscules garnisons charg\u00e9es d\u2019en assurer la souverainet\u00e9 fran\u00e7aise, et d\u2019extraordinaires colonies d\u2019esp\u00e8ces marines prot\u00e9g\u00e9es (oiseaux, tortues, requins\u2026) plus ou moins fr\u00e9quentables aux yeux de l\u2019auteur. Olivier Rolin s&#8217;y embarque pour quatre semaines \u00e0 bord du Champlain, un navire ravitailleur de la Marine nationale qui sert ici de d\u00e9cor \u00e0 un huis clos maritime.<\/p>\n<p>Que va-t-il chercher si loin ? Lui-m\u00eame l\u2019ignore, embarqu\u00e9 un peu par surprise \u00e0 la faveur d\u2019une pr\u00e9face r\u00e9dig\u00e9e pour une \u00e9dition de La Guerre du P\u00e9loponn\u00e8se de Thucydide publi\u00e9e par l\u2019\u00c9cole de guerre. \u00ab Cet embarquement est ma pige, en somme \u00bb, s\u2019amuse l\u2019\u00e9crivain qui s\u2019aper\u00e7oit qu\u2019il doit d\u00e9cid\u00e9ment beaucoup \u00e0 l\u2019historien grec du Ve si\u00e8cle avant J.-C., y compris son admission \u00e0 l\u2019\u00c9cole normale sup\u00e9rieure voici plus de cinquante ans. Olivier Rolin a le pied marin, voil\u00e0 des d\u00e9cennies qu\u2019il arpente le monde et ses tourments&#8230; Alors, l\u2019ex-militant d\u2019extr\u00eame gauche des ann\u00e9es 70, devenu \u00abraisonnablement patriote \u00bb, accepte cette invitation avec cependant un enthousiasme retenu, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 d\u2019autres r\u00eaveraient d\u2019\u00eatre \u00e0 sa place. Il le sait : l&#8217;exotisme est une cat\u00e9gorie fatigu\u00e9e de la litt\u00e9rature. On ne trouve dans ces confins que ce que l&#8217;on y apporte, c&#8217;est-\u00e0-dire, bien souvent, sa propre lassitude face \u00e0 un monde qui change. En t\u00e9moignent ces pages o\u00f9 l\u2019\u00e9crivain d\u00e9ambule, sans but ni envie, lors d\u2019une escale grise \u00e0 Durban en Afrique du Sud.<\/p>\n<p>Pourtant, le voyage vaut pour sa pure g\u00e9ographie et sa mati\u00e8re visuelle. Si Olivier Rolin d\u00e9laisse ici sa plume vive et ac\u00e9r\u00e9e d\u2019\u00e9crivain voyageur, il restitue avec justesse la difficult\u00e9 \u00e0 traduire l&#8217;immensit\u00e9 mouvante des paysages marins. Il bute, avec honn\u00eatet\u00e9, sur l&#8217;impossible capture de certaines nuances, \u00e0 commencer par ce bleu oc\u00e9anique, tour \u00e0 tour abyssal, \u00e9lectrique ou d\u00e9lav\u00e9 : \u00ab Il faudrait dire la transparence qui fait que la blancheur \u00e9blouissante de la plage se prolonge, se devine sous l\u2019eau peu profonde d\u2019abord, se disperse en paix, en \u00e9tincelles, il faudrait dire l\u2019infinie versatilit\u00e9 de la couleur qui fait que le bleu presque blanc de la l\u00e8vre qui l\u00e8che le sable se change insensiblement en bleu profond, presque violet, de p\u00e9tale d\u2019iris, il faudrait&#8230; \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Mais sous le soleil ou les brumes de l&#8217;oc\u00e9an Indien, c\u2019est \u00e0 un tout autre d\u00e9fi que nous assistons : le passage amer du cap de la vieillesse. \u00c0 peine \u00e0 bord, l&#8217;auteur est en effet confront\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019extr\u00eame jeunesse de l\u2019\u00e9quipage qui porte sur lui un regard de compassion polie : \u00ab La moyenne d\u2019\u00e2ge de l\u2019\u00e9quipage doit avoisiner les 25 ans, peut-\u00eatre un peu plus, et il est clair \u00e0 de multiples signes qu\u2019ils n\u2019ont jamais vu une vieille chose comme moi \u00e0 bord. Ils n\u2019en reviennent pas \u00bb, sourit-il. Lui-m\u00eame, en retour, pose sur ces jeunes femmes et ces jeunes hommes un \u0153il ironique. Deux mondes se c\u00f4toient, se fr\u00f4lent, sans jamais parvenir \u00e0 s\u2019apprivoiser : \u00ab Habitu\u00e9 qu\u2019on est \u00e0 soi-m\u00eame, et \u00e0 son apparence, on ne s\u2019est pas vu se transformer en cet \u00eatre de papier m\u00e2ch\u00e9 en qui les autres, qui ne vous connaissent pas, identifient imm\u00e9diatement un semi-vivant. L\u2019oc\u00e9an Indien sera pour moi la mer de la S\u00e9nilit\u00e9\u2026 \u00bb Il s\u2019ensuit une solitude nouvelle, un \u00e9loignement du monde, avec lesquels Rolin comprend qu\u2019il devra d\u00e9sormais composer.<\/p>\n<p>Cette nouvelle identit\u00e9, forg\u00e9e par le regard des autres, est heureusement v\u00e9cue avec une ironie toute \u00e9picurienne. L&#8217;auteur s\u2019amuse m\u00eame \u00e0 jouer les prolongations en se donnant \u00e0 bord le r\u00f4le du \u00ab vieux grognard \u00bb, posant notamment sur les femmes rencontr\u00e9es un regard d\u2019un autre temps qui fait souvent lever les yeux au ciel. Personne ne conna\u00eet l&#8217;\u0153uvre de Rolin, pas plus Port-Soudan (Prix F\u00e9mina 1994), Tigre en papier (2002) que Le M\u00e9t\u00e9orologue (2014). Les \u00e9crans ont d\u00e9finitivement remplac\u00e9 les livres. Que devient l\u2019\u00e9crivain dans cet environnement post-litt\u00e9raire ? Il transforme sa cabine en biblioth\u00e8que nomade, un \u00eelot de r\u00e9sistance de quelques m\u00e8tres carr\u00e9s. D\u00e8s lors, le navire devient m\u00e9taphore : un vaisseau qui avance sur un oc\u00e9an d&#8217;indiff\u00e9rence, transportant des textes que plus personne ne consulte, si ce n&#8217;est un dernier carr\u00e9 de nostalgiques pour qui les pages de Conrad, de Stevenson ou de Kessel fa\u00e7onnent encore le paysage. Elles dialoguent avec le fracas de la houle. Pour l&#8217;intellectuel qu\u2019est Rolin, il y a l\u00e0 une forme de jubilation lucide : le plus beau des voyages est toujours celui que l&#8217;on fait \u00e0 travers l&#8217;esprit des autres. Les livres ne sont pas un refuge contre le monde, ils en sont la boussole.<\/p>\n<p>Sans chercher \u00e0 donner de le\u00e7on, Olivier Rolin observe son propre d\u00e9clin \u00e0 travers le prisme de ceux qui l&#8217;entourent, scrutant ce reflet avec la m\u00eame curiosit\u00e9 d\u00e9tach\u00e9e qu&#8217;il pose sur ces atolls perdus dans l&#8217;oc\u00e9an Indien.
